Proof of the Democratic Party’s Horrible Record on Immigration Reform

On September 10, 2012, America’s Voice weakly criticized a column written by Ruben Navarrette, titled “The Charlotte hustle on immigration.”

Ruben’s main point was that the Democratic party’s portrayal of themselves as the champions of immigration reform to get the Latino vote was reprehensible.

We have echoed a similar sentiment.

America’s Voice accused Navarrette of letting his “Republican” instincts knock him off his rocker. Pure unsubstantiated rubbish.

As part of his argument, Navarrette cited to the Democrats’ reliance upon Bill Clinton as a speaker at their convention, noting that Bill Clinton signed into law “the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, “IIRIRA”which makes it easier for the federal government to deport illegal immigrants and harder to fight their removals.”

America’s voice tries to rebut Navarrette by saying that, yes, Bill Clinton signed into law the horrible 1996 laws, but the real bad guys were two evil Republicans, Rep. Lamar Smith and Rep. Elton Gallegly.

Curious at the lack of proof in conjunction with their blatant Democratic apologists, I went on the research warpath and found some interesting results.

First, 22 Democratic Senators voted in favor of making “IIRIRA” law. Some of these so-called pro-immigration reform Senators include Senator Harry Reid, Feinstein, and Leahy. Harry Reid, a champion of the dreamers as of late, has done so much with his vote in 1996 to terrorize the families of those that he purports to want to help in the present. Or it is just what Navarrette said.

88 House Democrats voted in favor of making “IIRIRA” law.  Only a slight majority at 92 voted against.

Numbers do not lie.

The Democratic party was overwhelmingly anti-immigrant in 1996 and was just as responsible as the GOP, if not more, for the millions of families destroyed because of the horribly anti-immigrant IIRIRA.

Although there were more Republicans overall in favor of the 1996 laws, the Democrats were their willing partners. Almost half of the Democrats in Congress votes “Yay.”

If they had chose to vote “No” , then their courting of the Latino vote could be called something other than an outright charade.

Barack Obama’s tenure is also rife with anti-immigrant actions. To the Democratic party and its apologists: stop obfuscating reality through blatant misrepresentation of your party’s record on immigration.

ADDENDUM

Ruben Navarrette read this article, making the following comment while addressing his Facebook audience:

The Telenovela Continues:

After Washington DC-based America’s Voice tried in vain to defend the Obama Administration by attacking me, a group of immigration lawyers who know the truth jumped in and defended me by attacking AV. The lawyers also pile on an additional fact — look at how many Democrats in Congress voted FOR the repressive 1996 immigration bill before Democratic President Bill Clinton signed it.

Oh, it’s on, baby!

Curiously, America’s voice was willing to call Ruben out but unwilling to respond when they were called out for fluffing their call out attempt. Maybe a Democratic champion such as Senator Reid will respond.
